Thursday evening, Husky Energy resported it had shut in a pipeline on its Saskatchewan Gathering System, approximately 30 kilometres east of Lloydminster, in response to a release detected that morning.

This action isolated and halted the release, says Mel Duvall, media and issues manager.

The pipeline transports blended heavy oil and diluent. Total volumes are estimated at 200 to 250 cubic metres.

A sheen was observed on the North Saskatchewan River in the vicinity. Husky says cleanup crews and equipment were immediately deployed to the site and response actions have been taken.

Berms are in place at the site and containment booms have been deployed along the river. Air and shoreline surveillance is underway. A water monitoring and sample testing program is in place.

"Downstream communities and neighbours have been notified and we are working closely with the appropriate government and regulatory authorities.  No water advisories have been issued," Duvall reported Thursday evening. "Further updates will be provided as information becomes available."

He said Husky’s main focus remains the safety of the public and the protection of the environment, reported Duvall.

"Husky immediately deployed spill response equipment and crews to commence clean up, recovery and water sampling."
