Active Healthy Kids Canada has released a position statement on active video games. also known as "exergames."

Following a rigorous scientific review, Active Healthy Kids Canada does not recommend active video games as a strategy to help kids be more physically active.

Saskatchewan in motion supports this position. Less than 15 per cent of Saskatchewan children and youth are getting the more than 60 minutes of physical activity they need each day to be healthy, happy and productive. Statistics also show children are averaging six to seven hours of screen time per day and more over the weekends.

To help parents make active choices for their kids this holiday season, Saskatchewan in motion has prepared its third annual in motion Active Toy Guide. It is filled with a variety of toys for all ages, girls and boys, and some the whole family can enjoy - all of which encourage active play.

"It's hard to compete with the excitement of video games, but we believe nothing can replace fresh air, rosy cheeks and interactive fun with friends and family that outdoor play can provide," says in motion general manager Cathie Kryzanowski.

"We encourage parents to encourage kids to swap 30 minutes of screen time with 30 minutes of physical activity every day".
