HUMBOLDT, MELFORT — Work on installing fibre optic cables for home internet service has begun in Melfort, with Humboldt next on the schedule.

SaskTel will install most of the fibre optic on telephone lines, which it calls aerial deployment, but in some places, depending on the situation, the fibre optic will be installed underground.

“We anticipate that in a week we’ll be 30 to 40 per cent complete, perhaps, with the construction in Melfort for the aerial fibre deployment,” said Michelle Englot, SaskTel’s director of external communications.

“If everything goes as planned in Melfort, we're anticipating within a month or so we’ll begin construction in Humboldt.”

Englot said the plan is to launch fibre optic internet service in select areas of Humboldt, Melfort, Tisdale and Nipawin in March 2020.

“It is a very significant undertaking for SaskTel and it is taking us some time to do it,” Englot said.

The service will provide download speeds of up to 300 megabits per second and upload speeds of up to 80 megabits per second.
