Hurricane Isaac hit landfall Tuesday night, but Saskatchewan-based storm chaser Greg Johnson wasn't there to cover it.

Johnson, the Tornado Hunter profiled in Wednesday's News-Optimist, had talked in that interview of going down to Florida to chase Isaac and get good storm pictures.

However, Hurricane Isaac's path ended up veering much farther west towards New Orleans, which received the brunt of the Category 1 storm Tuesday and Wednesday.

Moreover, Johnson had his eye on conditions in eastern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, where the hot daytime conditions raised the tempting prospect of a severe weather outbreak.

Earlier this week, Johnson told his followers on Twitter he had decided to pass on chasing Hurricane Isaac for the prospect of a possible tornado chase on the prairies.

Fellow storm-chaser Reed Timmer of Oklahoma, however, did go down to New Orleans and was there when the hurricane hit. Timmer was a frequent visitor to Saskatchewan this summer to chase tornadoes.

Both Johnson and Timmer are scheduled to be at a Storming the Tailgate event in Regina just before Sunday's game at Mosaic Stadium between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Johnson will be in North Battleford at the Tropical Inn on Sept. 22 and 23 to provide instruction in a digital SLR camera workshop. Those interested can sign up at his website at tornadohunter.ca.
