There was a surprise in store for Mayor Ian Hamilton at Monday's council meeting.
Councillor Don Buglas was given permission to leave his usual council seat to make a presentation from the podium. His presentation was to Hamilton of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal - one of approximately 60,000 recipients of the medal.
Hamilton was nominated for the honour by Battlefords-Lloydminster MP Gerry Ritz.
In attendance at the meeting to see Buglas present the medal to Hamilton were two other medal recipients, Rob Rongve and City Manager Jim Toye.
Following the meeting Hamilton told reporters "it was certainly an honor to receive the award."
"I'm privileged to share this with some very wonderful people in this community and throughout the province and throughout the country. And so yeah, it's a thrill. I'm looking at these people in our community who have done so much that I admire I'm inspired by them, so this is really something to share with them."
