Julyna vs. Movember: raising awareness below the belt

A group of women from Toronto and their friends have teamed up with the Canadian Cancer Society to create a community initiative that will raise money for cervical cancer awareness.

A group of women from Toronto and their friends have teamed up with the Canadian Cancer Society to create a community initiative that will raise money for cervical cancer awareness.

The fundraising technique requires creativity and humour - encouraging women to sculpt their "down there" hair during the month of July. Similar to Movember, when men all over the globe participated in a moustache - growing charity event, raising $22 million dollars for Prostate Cancer.

The idea is to increase awareness of cervical cancer and promote healthy lifestyle choices in an effort to prevent the spread of HPV.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, it is estimated that 1,300 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed in Canada in 2011 and approximately 350 of those will result in death.

Funds raised by Julyna will go to the Canadian Cancer Society to fund research and draw attention below the belt. They indicate that scheduled pap tests and screening for HPV means finding a cancer or precancerous conditions at an early stage - increasing the chances of successful treatments.

So far, the women participating in the event have collectively raised close to $6,000 towards the cause and continue to keep the humour alive with inspirational styles such as the "Side Part", the "Landing Strip" and the "Charlie Chaplin."
