North Battleford Comprehensive High School student Kiley Elmer has again been recognized for service to her community.
Kiley, the Battlefords Junior Citizen of the Year, has been awarded the Governor General Caring Citizen Award.
Created in 1995, the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award recognizes individuals who volunteer their time to help others and to build a smarter and more caring nation. The award also highlights the example set by these volunteers.
NBCHS teacher Kelly Waters submitted the nomination for the award.
In it, elementary teacher Dale Dillabough said, “She was always the first to be welcoming, a peacemaker, wanting to diffuse conflict in the classroom, willing to try new things with a smile on her face and positive attitude.”
Waters says when Kiley entered high school at Grade 9, she continued as an active force in student leadership.
“Her formidable yet gentle passion for both school spirit and social issues culminated in her being senior pin amid sustaining honour roll academic standing along with juggling support of various school groups such as soccer, badminton, drama and Me to We,” Waters explains.
As senior pin leading a school of 1,000 students, Kiley is described as integral to school spirit events, but it is also her personal goal to ensure the SRC supports social issues. Me to We works alongside her in this effort, hosting a Terry Fox Run, supporting Movember, organizing a major food drive in December and co-support of Me to We activities aimed at completing the brick-by-brick goal begun three years ago to raise $10, 000 for a school in Kenya.
“Her enthusiasm and diplomacy have been the magical, motivating conduit leading to successful collaboration between various school groups,” Waters says.
The teacher goes on to describe the many issues Kiley embraces from mental health to raising awareness about drinking and driving and her wide range of volunteer activities in the school and the community.
