A small mistake ended up damaging a Humboldt home on Monday night.
At 5:08 p.m. on December 10, the Humboldt Fire Department was called to a structure fire at a house on the 800 block of 16th St.
At the scene, they found that a resident of the home had placed a toaster on the stove while supper was being made, then mistakenly turned on the burner under the toaster.
The toaster started on fire, and that quickly spread to cabinets.
The owner of the home threw water on the the fire and managed to knock it down quite a bit, noted Fire Chief Norbert LeBlanc. When firefighters arrived, they just had to finish the extinguishment.
The fire department also checked inside the walls in the kitchen to be sure the fire had not spread into unseen areas, and unplugged and removed the stove from the house.
Though there was no water damage to the house, the amount of black smoke created by the fire, and the fire itself caused an estimated $15,000 to $20,000 damage, LeBlanc said.
Nine firefighters were on scene for about an hour.
