A late third period goal sunk the Melfort Mustangs as they were downed 4-3 by the Yorkton Terriers in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Yorkton.

The Dec. 12 loss snapped a streak of five straight games picking up at least a point, dating back to a 3-2 loss against the Terriers on Nov. 22.

The game got off to a solid start for the Mustangs as Midget AAA call-up Beau Stevenson scored his first career SJHL goal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead after the first period.

The second period did not get off to the greatest of starts for the Mustangs as the Terriers scored two unanswered goals to lead 2-1.

A late power play goal by Andrew Thompson pulled the Mustangs back into a tie with the Terriers, as the two teams hit the break tied at two.

The Terriers regained their one goal lead just 4:24 into the third period and hung on to the lead for nearly 15 minutes.

With time winding down in the third period, Colin Schmidt scored his 11th of the season, and with just 48 seconds left in the third period, appeared to send the game into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs the game never made it to overtime as Chantz Petruic scored his ninth goal of the season with just 19 seconds remaining to give the Terriers the win.

Special teams were solid for the Mustangs despite the loss as they scored once on four power play opportunities, while killing off all six power plays they faced.

Hunter Arps was charged with the loss in the Mustangs goal allowing four goals on 28 shots as the Mustangs outshot the Terriers 39-28.

The Mustangs will look to get back in the win column on Dec. 15 when they visit the Battlefords North Stars.
