Local towns struggle to fill councils

Towns in the Humboldt region are, for the most part, struggling to find enough people to fill their councils this fall.

Towns in the Humboldt region are, for the most part, struggling to find enough people to fill their councils this fall. Nominations for seats on urban municipal councils in Saskatchewan closed on September 19, and while there seems to be a healthy interest in those seats in at least one town in this region, others have seen interest wane since the last call three years ago.Cudworth will hold not only an election for mayor, but one for council as well. In the mayoral race, incumbent Harold M. Mueller is being challenged for his seat by Peter Honaizer. In the council race, eight people are vying for six seats around the table. Incumbent candidates Peggy Becker, Valerie Kuemper, Bernadette Lange and Elaine Olexson are being challenged by newcomers Patti Cairns, Ron Cairns, Bill Cherneski and Garry Frie.In the Town of LeRoy, the entire council was elected by acclamation. Morris Hartman is back in as mayor, and the council seats are filled by five incumbents - Ray Sussums, Ben Dyck, Denis McKnight, Brian Thoen and Ken Crowter - and one newcomer, Dustin Hartman. The Town of St. Brieux also had its council filled by acclammation. Leon Rheaume is the new mayor of St. Brieux, taking over from Pauline Boyer, who chose not to run again. Council is filled with two incumbents - Pat Yeager and Carmen Bedard - and two newcomers, Denis Coquet and Frank Blandin. Two former councillors - Dan Clifford and Tony Kosokowsky - did not run for re-election. Other towns, including Bruno, Colonsay, Lanigan and Watson, are having to open a second round of nominations, not having received enough in the first round. In Bruno, while incumbent Audrey Ludwig was elected by acclamation to the mayoral seat, they are still one councillor short of a full table. Bernie Huber, Linda Bender, Guy Pulvermacher and John Huber are incumbents elected back to council by acclamation, joined by newcomer Kayla Shaw. With present councillors Lucille Granger and Barb Pavelick not running again, that leaves one council position open, which means the town will open another round of nominations for that seat. It's the same situation in Colonsay.Mayor James Gray is back in office by acclamation, as are incumbent councillors Amanda Brochu, Scott Yausie and Jack Campbell. Newcomers Lonnie Burns and Warren Cooper will fill two of the other seats on Colonsay's council, leaving one seat open for another call for nominations. In Lanigan, Andy Cebryk has gone from councillor to mayor, elected by acclamation. He replaces longtime mayor Bernie Bishop. Lanigan's council, elected by acclamation, now includes incumbents Paul Mamer, Velda Daelick and Robert Simpson, and newcomers Marilyn Bodnar and John Dueck. Again, one council seat has been left open for another call for nominations. The Town of Watson, meanwhile, needs two more seats filled. Mayor Mike Saretsky was elected again by acclamation, as was incumbent councillor Garth Davis. New councillors, in by acclamation, include Neil Bryce, Islay Ehlert and Sondra Whitesell. That adds up to four council members, when six are needed.
