A Maidstone man was sentenced May 22 after pleading guilty to a break and enter that happened near the village of Lone Rock.

Dean Christopher Rempel was sentenced in Lloydminster provincial court for break and enter while committing theft under $5,000. He was sentenced by Judge Kim Young to 60 days in custody followed by a year's probation. There are also numerous conditions attached, including abstaining from alcohol and drugs and not being present in bars or homes where alcohol is present.

According to the RCMP, the offence took place April 14 in the early morning hours. Rempel told the judge he was not himself, as he entered the home due to his abuse of alcohol and drugs.

He stole money, cigarettes and a cell phone. According to police, the homeowner quickly recognized Rempel and contacted the RCMP. Rempel was later arrested without incident.

The RCMP reminds homeowners to secure their property when sleeping or away. This includes not leaving garage door openers visible, as they provide easy access to garages and homes.
