NIPAWIN — Nipawin’s LP Miller Comprehensive is joining a province-wide effort to enhance the relationship between teachers and their First Nations students so the students are successful in school.

Following Their Voices is a professional development program targeted at the 50 secondary schools in the province with the highest numbers of First Nations students. Teachers are trained on how to better engage students based on advice from elders and international research.

“LP Miller will be accessing a high-quality professional development program for the next three years,” said Don Remple, the division’s director of education. “The school receives funding for a teacher-leader to work with their colleagues in the building to better serve the needs of First Nations/Métis students.”

The program will be funded at LP Miller for three years.

“There’s a broad cohort of provincial high schools that are involved in training and development together through the year as well, so they’ll learn best practises from other high schools in Saskatchewan as well with similar demographics,” Remple said.

Training begins this spring and will expand to all teachers in the fall.
