The Leask Centennial Committee hosted a fundraising event March 16 at the school gymnasium.
The entertainment began at 4:30 p.m. with Watching Eye Magic's Roger Boucher who twisted balloons into almost any shape or form to create animals, swords and hats. He entertained adults with his twisting ability and created a make believe world for the children as they played with their balloon creations with friends.
Boucher's charismatic blend of wit and charm was combined with his passion for magic during his post supper entertainment. Boucher used audience interaction to perform his mind-boggling tricks and the sincere innocence of the youth added humour to the performance. Boucher performed card tricks and a number of visual illusions using a variety of simple everyday props.
Joanne McHanson, one of the many volunteers on the centennial committee, was pleased with the turnout of over 200 for the supper and entertainment. Individuals came from the Leask area as well as surrounding communities to support the event. Proceeds will go towards funding various activities during the village's centennial celebration June 29 to July 1.
"We would like to keep our activity costs to the public economical, if not free, during the centennial celebrations," explained McHanson.
The centennial committee has also developed a cookbook, Savouring the Memories. The publication is full of recipes, stories and history making it an ideal keepsake of the community's 100-year celebration.
The line up of events for the June 29 to July 1 weekend include a parade, flea market, car show, children's activities, ball hockey, talent show and horseshoe tournament. June 30 will conclude with two sittings at the centennial supper followed by a dance and social. Festivities continue into July 1 in conjunction with Canada Day. A church service starts the day followed by a full day of ball hockey, children's activities and street entertainment. The evening will conclude with a community wiener roast and display of fireworks.
The centennial raffle prizes include a commemorative quilt created and donated by Sylvia Rogerson, who also created and donated the second prize of a commemorative wall hanging. Other prizes include planters and flowers, Savouring the Memories cookbook and a souvenir t-shirt. Draw date is June 30.
The centennial committee's next fundraiser will be the steak night held March 31 in Saskatoon.
