You need a scorecard to keep up with the roster changes at North Battleford City Hall these days.

There has been a flood of departures recently from the ranks of City administration, with multiple vacancies to be filled. The latest departure was announced Monday as Director of Finance Amarjit Mahil has departed, taking on a new position with the University of Saskatchewan.

Acting City Manager Bill Samborski made the announcement at Monday’s council meeting.

An “opportunity came up he thought he couldn’t pass up,” Samborski said of Mahil’s departure.

Mahil’s new job “gives him an opportunity to be with his family a little bit more and take a bit of a different path in his career,” he added.

This is the latest in a series of departures or announced departures since the resignation earlier this year of former city manager Jim Puffalt, who left for the same role in Moose Jaw.

Samborski himself has announced his retirement after years as director of Leisure Services, due to take effect by the end of November.

Also gone is Susanne Abe, the communications coordinator, who recently left to move back to Germany along with her family.

As a result of these departures, a number of city administration officials have had to take on interim roles while new staff is being recruited.

Replacing Mahil on an interim basis is Margarita Pena, whose appointment as acting director of finance was announced Monday night.

Pena has worked for the city as finance manager for the past year. Samborski pointed to that as a positive, noting that Pena “has a really good handle on the financial situation of the City.”

Pena will continue with her new responsibilities until a new director of finance is found.
