A man accused of firing his gun with intent near a police officer conducting a traffic stop was granted bail in Prince Albert Provincial Court Dec. 16.
Darren Hildebrand, 42, of the R.M. of Canwood allegedly shot close to where a police officer had a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation.
After hearing the gunshot, the person stopped by police fled on foot and the police officer immediately drove to the nearby residence where he believed the firearm was discharged. The officer found a man outside holding a firearm.
This prompted a multi-agency police emergency response with officers from Spiritwood, Blaine Lake, Shellbrook and Ahtahkakoop detachments, as we well as a Conservation Officer and the Saskatchewan RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), called in to assist.
It took police about three hours to capture Hildebrand. They arrested him in the backyard. A woman at the residence was taken to a safe location.
Police searched the residence and seized four more firearms and ammunition.
Hildenbrand was charged with discharging a firearm while being reckless, discharging with intent, unsafe storage of firearms, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of pointing a firearm, and resisting arrest.
RCMP say the person who fled the traffic stop was later found at their home safe and didn’t have any injuries.
Hildebrand is now scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Jan. 26, 2021, to elect how he wants to be tried.
