There were many hands helping out at the Habitat for Humanity build in Humboldt on November 21.
A group from the Information Services Corporation (ISC) office in Humboldt was downstairs on one side of the duplex, constructing cabinets for the bathrooms and kitchen. That group had committed to working on the house for two days last week.
Also on site were members of the Humboldt RCMP, who gave an afternoon to the project. Some were cutting holes in the floor for the hot air registers, while others assisted crews in other areas.
In the other side of the duplex were the employees of RBC in Humboldt, installing laminate floors in the kitchen/living room area, as well as in the bedrooms.
There was even work going on outside. A crew from the City of Humboldt was digging a huge hole in the street, which was blocked off to traffic, in order to extend the water and sewer lines down the street, to service the Habitat lot and other lots on the street.
All in all, a lot of activity, even for this build site, which many in the area have taken time to work at in the last few months.
The duplex is set to be completed early in the new year. Construction, besides the digging of the basement, began in early July, and aside from the systems that had to be installed by professional tradespeople, has been built with volunteer labour from the community.
Each side of the bi-level duplex has four bedrooms over 1,900 square feet on two floors.
The two families who will own the homes when they are complete are Christine Knutson and her children Skyler and McKenzie, and Greg and Toni Pascal and their three children, Alex, Kaydence and Shyanne.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low income with access to affordable homeownership. Homeowners must contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home, and will hold a mortgage on the home through Habitat when it is complete.
