The City of North Battleford task force struck to deal with the Maple Leaf Foods plant closure plans to meet again in the coming months.

The task force met in early December for the first time, said City Director of Business Development Denis Lavertu, and the intention is to meet again in late February or early March. Lavertu said Maple Leaf should have some additional material ready at that time.

Lavertu provided that information at Monday's city council meeting in response to an inquiry from Councillor Brad Pattinson, who asked for an update on the task force.

The Maple Leaf task force was set up in response to the announced closure of the Maple Leaf Foods plant on Canola Avenue, which will leave 330 employees out of work as of 2013. One goal of the task force is to provide employees and families with transition services, while a second goal is to find a new use for the plant.

Representatives on the task force when it was first announced included the City of North Battleford, Service Canada, the Ministry of Advanced Education, Enterprise Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and Maple Leaf Foods.

"We did have a great initial meeting," said Lavertu, which he said outlined the initial roles and services provided.

Mayor Ian Hamilton also noted media reports where the representatives of both the municipal and federal government pledged help with respect to the Maple Leaf closure.
