May crime stats show increases

There was a noticeable jump in the crime statistics in North Battleford for May.

A number of categories recorded increases, including person offences, residential break and enters, property offences, criminal code offences, liquor acts, municipal bylaw offences and provincial traffic offences.

Business break and enters, drug offences and impaired operation of a motor vehicle all declined, but overall the detachment saw an increase in calls for service for the month, from 1,212 in May 2012 to 1,302 in May 2013.

The statistical data was prepared and submitted by the detachment's S/Sgt. Phil Wilson and presented to North Battleford city council Monday.

The numbers for May 2013 compared to May 2012, are:

Person offences up to 85 from 77;

Business break and enters up to eight from five;

Property offences up to 305 from 179;

Criminal code offences up to 147 from 132;

Liquor act offences up to 26 from 24;

Provincial traffic offences up to 279 from 176;

Municipal bylaw offences up to 26 from 23;

Business break and enters declined from three to two for the same period, and drug offences also dropped from 40 in May 2012 to 30 in May 2013.

For the year to date, calls for service are down from 6,299 in 2012 down to 5,598 so far in 2013.

Business break and enters remain down 35 per cent, criminal code offences are down 18 per cent, drug offences down 27 per cent and municipal bylaws down four per cent. Provincial traffic offences are also down 28 per cent.

But residential break and enters are up 14 per cent for the year, property offences up seven per cent, person offences are up seven per cent, liquor acts offences are up four per cent and motor vehicle collisions are up 38 per cent,

False alarms are also up 18 per cent for the year, while calls for assistance are down 37 per cent.

In response to a question from Councillor Ryan Bater, Wilson confirmed there would be foot patrols happening downtown again this summer, and adds that several local detachment members will be taking part in a bike course this week to increase their visibility downtown,

A total of 18 foot patrols were recorded for May, up from 13 the previous month.
