BATTLEFORD — Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie expressed his condolences regarding the tragedy at James Smith Cree Nation and at Weldon at the start of Monday’s council meeting at Town Hall.

“Just want to take a moment to pass on condolences and support to James Smith Cree Nation and the awful events that happened here over the weekend,” said Leslie. The mayor also expressed condolences regarding the separate incident at Witchekan Lake First Nation and R.M. of Brittannia.

There were 11 people killed and 19 injured in the mass stabbing incident on James Smith Cree Nation and at Weldon Sunday. One of the suspects, Damien Sanderson, was found dead on Monday while the other, Myles Sanderson, is still at large.

Mayor Leslie said flags at Town Hall were being flown at half mast “in honour of those affected by the senseless violence” that happened on the weekend. “We send our best to those families affected by this ordeal.”
