Mayor Ryan Bater wants to hear from the candidates in the federal election.
At a meeting of city council Monday night, Bater proposed sending correspondence out to the candidates in Battlefords-Lloydminster, as well as federal leaders, to find out their policies on issues of importance to the City of North Battleford.
In particular, Bater wants to know where the parties stand on criminal justice issues.
“We know we have challenges in that area and we have challenges with organized criminal activity and the like,” Bater said.
Council thought sending a letter would be a good idea.
“I think there’s been recent announcements with regards to gang initiatives that the federal government is funding with the province,” said Councillor Greg Lightfoot.
“Definitely with regards to the justice system, I think there’s a backlog in there and I think the backlog was created because of some issues created with how the justice system works.”
Councillor Kelli Hawtin said it would be valid to pose a question about provincial organized crime.
“As individual detachments it’s very difficult to deal with because detachments have boundaries,” Hawtin said.
The plan now is for a letter to be composed and sent to all the Battlefords-Lloydminster candidates and party leaders, and invite them to respond.
