McDonald’s is coming to Melfort.

A City of Melfort press release dated Feb. 21 from John Burton of Avatex Development Corp. and Brent Lutz, the city’s community development manager, announced that the fast food chain has purchased land at the StoneGate Shopping Centre.

The 1.2 acre parcel won’t have a restaurant on it for some time, however.

“McDonald’s has told us that they will not build this year. They have a significant process to follow to build on a site after they’ve acquired it and they don’t have adequate planning time for 2017,” explained Burton.

“They haven’t made a commitment to build in 2018 at this point either, but we’re expecting that that will probably happen.”

Lutz commented in the press release that they “would be happy to see construction start as soon as possible but it is our understanding that McDonald’s have already finalized their construction calendar for the coming construction season.”

Long term plans for StoneGate include further retail stores.

“We think that [McDonald’s will] bring a lot of traffic to StoneGate and add to the traffic there, which in turn will enhance our ability to attract further retailers as we go forward,” said Burton.

The site currently has a Canadian Tire, Mark's Work Warehouse, Canalta Hotel, Tim Hortons and Boston Pizza.

Mayor Rick Lang was not immediately available for comment.
