Meadow Lake RCMP investigate shots fired along Highway 4

Police continue to investigate to determine the source of these reported firearms discharges.

MEADOW LAKE - On Oct. 27 around 11 p.m., Meadow Lake RCMP responded to the report of shots fired along Highway 4 by Meadow Lake.

Officers launched an investigation to identify any potential suspects or vehicle descriptions but had no leads.

On Oct. 28, at approximately 9:45 p.m., officers received a report of shots fired near a high school. Meadow Lake RCMP immediately responded along with Meadow Lake RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS). No suspect or firearm was located in the vicinity. Officers conducted neighbourhood inquiries to gather more information. The high school and nearby college were in a hold and secure as a safety precaution and was lifted shortly after, once there was no threat confirmed and no further reports of shots being fired.

The investigation is still ongoing by police to determine the source of these reported firearms discharges. Police are encouraging the public to contact their local RCMP detachment if they have any information that may assist police with this investigation.

On Oct. 28, officers from the Meadow Lake RCMP detachment and the RCMP Police Dog Services were conducting patrols in the community when they located a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed through a residential area.

The suspect vehicle collided with a member of the public’s vehicle and officers observed an occupant depart the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers continued to search through the community and conducted neighbourhood inquiries in an effort to locate the suspect.

Officers located the suspect who matched the initial description. The male suspect advised police he was armed with weapons. The officers attempted to arrest the male, who continued to resist arrest. Efforts to complete the arrest of the male required police intervention tools including a CEW (Conducted Energy Weapon) deployment. The male was safely taken into custody and was later transported to hospital to receive medical assistance unrelated to the arrest. He was released from hospital on Oct. 29.

As a result of this investigation, a 26-year-old man from Green Lake has been charged with 14 offences, in addition to breaching his conditional sentence order.

He made his first court appearance and is scheduled to appear next on Nov. 14 in Meadow Lake Provincial Court.
