MELFORT — Melfort’s city council discussed Broadway Avenue during the final council meeting of 2020.
This is both a heavy vehicle route and a partial dangerous goods route, connects Highway 41 to Highway 6 running north and south through Melfort, and goes past both the Melfort Hospital and the Maude Burke Elementary School.
A letter to the city council from Melfort citizen Lorne Larson was brought to the Dec. 14 meeting. Larson reported that speeding is a problem on that street and would like to see more done to alleviate the problem. The condition of Broadway Avenue South is also questionable given its usage as a heavy truck route.
Broadway Avenue South from Saskatchewan Drive to Wesley Street is an option for the 2021 Capital Utility Budget, reported Gerald Gilmore, director of works and utilities. Broadway Avenue North was paved last year given its poor condition, he said.
Larson would like to see the designation of the route changed given the heavy truck and dangerous good road runs past a school. However, Gilmore recommended to the council that they keep Broadway Avenue as a heavy truck route but they will be talking with representatives from Maude Burke to see if there are traffic issues with heavy trucks.
Council passed that motion, which also included expanding the dangerous goods route to include all of Broadway Avenue given the city maps do not include a section from Saskatchewan Drive to Burns Avenue.
The City of Melfort will once again be eligible for municipal revenue sharing funding and fit all the requirements required by the province which include disclosure statements, audited reports and bylaws and employee code of conduct.
