Tight game yields no results for Mustangs
An early second period goal stood up as the game winner as the Melfort Mustangs were beaten 3-2 by the Battlefords North Stars in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Melfort on Dec. 15.
The North Stars scored just 17 seconds into the second period, and hung on from there, as the two teams played the final 39:43 scoreless.
The game got off to a wacky start as the teams combined for four goals, and 20 shots in a busy opening 20 minutes.
Chaseton Braid opened the scoring for the North Stars, notching his tenth of the season, but the Mustangs answered back as Jake Misskey scored his second of the year less than three minutes late to tie the score at one.
The North Stars once again regained the lead, this time off the stick of Dakota Huebner, but much like first time the North Stars scored, the Mustangs wasted little time getting the goal back as Drew Warkentine scored his fourth of the year just 1:02 later to send the game into the first intermission tied at two.
Owen Lamb would then score the second period goal, which would stand up as the winner as the Mustangs fell 3-2.
Special teams were anything but special for the Mustangs in the contest as they finished the evening 0-for-3 with the man advantage, while the North Stars finished the evening 2-for-5.
Evan Plotnik was charged with the loss in the Mustangs goal, giving up three goals on 32 shots, as the North Stars outshot the Mustangs 32-25.
Fast start leads Mustangs to win over Klippers
An excellent start was all the Melfort Mustangs needed to knock off the Kindersley Klippers 6-3 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action from Kindersley.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead barely eight minutes into the opening period, and extended their lead to 5-0 by the 11:22 mark of the second period.
Nolan Kadachuk got the Mustangs on the board with his second goal of the season at 4:56.
Kalem Zary would then add his sixth of the season at 6:20, and Andrew Thompson his ninth of the year at 8:02 to give the Mustangs a commanding 3-0 lead after the first period.
Carson Albrecht wasted little time extending the Mustangs’ lead to four in the second period, as he scored his 11th of the year just 42 seconds in.
Reed Gunville would add his fourth goal of the season at 11:22 to give the Mustangs a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Klippers would got a goal late in the second period to cut the Mustangs lead to four, and then another early in period three to trim the Mustangs’ lead down to three.
Rock Ruschkowski put an end to any comeback thoughts the Klippers might have had with his sixth goal of the season at 5:43 of period three.
The Klippers would add a goal in the final minute but it was too little too late as the Mustangs skated away with the 6-3 win.
Both teams cashed in once on the power play as the Mustangs finished the evening 1-for-5 with the man advantage, while the Klippers ended up 1-for-6.
Plotnik picked up the win in the Mustangs goal turning aside 33 of the 36 shots he faced as the Klippers outshot the Mustangs 36-32.
The Mustangs will look to extend their winning streak to two games, and head into the holidays on a high note when they host the Humboldt Broncos on Dec. 22 in their final game before the Christmas holiday.
