MELFORT — A decade-long promise to install a CT scanner at the Melfort Hospital is being fulfilled.

The March 18 budget has allocated $2 million to pay for the piece of diagnostic equipment.

“It was important for our government to provide the funding for the CT scanner in Melfort,” said Donna Harpauer, the province’s finance minister.

Melfort City Council has been lobbying the provincial government for the CT scanner since the promise was made in 2010.

The City of Melfort said in a press release that they were pleased to hear the news.

“This news means that citizens from throughout the entire region will benefit from shortened wait times. In addition, practicing physicians throughout the region will gain an important diagnostic tool,” wrote Brent Lutz, director of development, planning and community relations.

The city also used the time to recognize individuals who were “instrumental in championing this cause” including; Rod Gantefoer, former MLA and minister of finance; the late Kevin Phillips, former MLA and mayor of Melfort; past and present members of the Municipal Health Advocacy Committee including chairman Mayor Rick Lang; Todd Goudy, current MLA and; the practicing medical professionals from throughout the region.
