Battlefords residents were treated to a strange lightshow Tuesday night, after a meteor lit up the sky briefly around 9:40 p.m.

The meteor is believed to have landed somewhere near North Battleford, possibly near Rockhaven, and Battlefords residents heard and saw the rock. Residents describe hearing a "thump" at some point in the night. Those who witnessed the meteor saw a bright streak covering a large stretch in the sky, or saw the whole night sky light up dramatically.

Rockhaven residents described the object as being rather more dramatic, involving a "sonic boom," and describing the incident as similar to a lightning strike.

The meteor was in fact seen further west than Edmonton, and its trail was filmed by an observatory in Calgary. Nevertheless, the meteor itself has not yet been found. Scientists searching for it believe it may have disintegrated upon entering the earth's atmosphere, and was probably smaller than a microwave oven when it created the light show. It is believed to be smaller than the Buzzard Coolee meteor that was found in 2008, as the Buzzard Coulee meteor was believed to be the size of a desk when it entered the atmosphere.
