"Lest we forget" is the theme depicted on a mural recently erected at the Maidstone Legion Hall.
It was commissioned by the Maidstone Communities in Bloom committee in their continued effort to beautify the town.
The artists are Heather Chisholm of Victoria, B.C, and Gilliam Chum and Janice McConnell of Maidstone. They have captured the essence of the only reminders that may be left to many family members after a war - letters, official documents, uniforms and medals of bravery.
A close examination of the mural reveals the envelopes are addressed to Maidstone residents. The portion of the letter on the mural is a copy of the original sent by the late Art Buckley to his parents following his release as a prisoner in the Second World War.
The mural is a tribute to the many service personnel from the area who fought for freedom and a reminder that we owe them our gratitude.
