An event this weekend at the Battlefords Provincial Park is being held in honour of a young man who took his own life. His parents want to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.
Saturday will be the first Super Jam, a music festival raising funds for Tim Hortons Send a Kid To Camp, a charity championed by the parents of Ryan "Chisel" Vanderpost, who volunteered with that organization as a camp counsellor.
On April 29, 2011, Ryan Vanderpost of Uxbridge, Ont., took his own life. His parents Garry and Bev Vanderpost, who now live in Saskatoon where his mom is from originally, are determined to use the experience for good and have established a trust in his name.
Super Jam will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the main beach. The free event is family-focused (no beer gardens) with sand castle contests, face-painting, silent auctions, a 50/50 draw, children's activities and live music.
Headlining the festival are Saskatoon bands the Vinyl Prophets and the Milcreek Boys.
Event organizers say Saskatchewan Provincial Parks has generously partnered with them to make the event possible. The organizers hope to see the event become an annual music festival at Jackfish Lake.
Funds raised will be going to Tim Hortons camp day to send underprivileged youth to camp.
