The Melfort Mustangs showed an excellent ability to bounce back as they knocked off the Notre Dame Hounds 5-2.
The Jan. 27 contest was a solid effort for the visitors, who were looking to erase the memories of a 7-3 loss to the Battlefords North Stars in their previous game.
The Mustangs came out of the gates flying as they doubled up the Hounds in shots, 12-6 and scored the period’s only goal as Tyson Meyers scored his fifth goal of the season, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead after the opening period.
After a relatively quiet first 20 minutes, the teams exploded offensively in the second, as they scored a combined four goals.
Carson Albrecht opened the scoring for the Mustangs in the second period, scoring his 17th goal of the season on the power play as the Mustangs extended their lead to 2-0.
The two-goal lead lasted just over three minutes before Christopher Bernard scored his second of the year, cutting the Mustangs’ lead back to a goal.
Newly acquired Mustang Ben Allen regained the Mustangs’ two-goal lead with his first goal with his new club.
Unfortunately for the visitors, they were unable to go into the break with the lead as Sam Robinson notched his second as a Hound, sending the game into the second intermission with the Mustangs leading 3-2.
The third period came and went relatively quietly as neither team found the back of the net until the final 1:20 when Justin Ball scored into an empty net.
Albrecht scored his second of the night 1:00 later, also into an empty net, giving the Mustangs the 5-2 win.
Hunter Arps picked up the win in the Mustangs goal turning aside 24 of the 26 shots he faced as the Mustangs outshot the Hounds 29-26.
The Mustangs will look to move one step closer to the playoffs on Jan. 31 when they play host to the tenth seeded Melville Millionaires.
