The Melfort Mustangs’ stretch of tough results continued as they dropped a 4-2 decision to a motivated Flin Flon Bombers team in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League action in Flin Flon.

Tristan Hermary and Kayle Tosh scored for the Mustangs while the team was shorthanded during the second and in the third, respectively.

Despite an excellent first period in the Feb. 25 game for the Mustangs, they found themselves behind 2-0 and could never dig out of the early hole.

“We were all over them... we were outshooting them 8-2 at one point in the first so I thought we were fine that way,” said Trevor Blevins, the head coach. “We’re doing a lot of good things. It’s just a matter of getting it all together.”

Despite the loss, the Mustangs had a number of positives they could take away from the hockey game, including a penalty kill that limited the league’s best power play to one goal on four opportunities.

“Our penalty kill was aggressive and it was hard and I thought we did a great job blocking shots and basically winning all the loose puck battles,” said Blevins.

Looking ahead, the Mustangs travel to La Ronge on Feb. 28 to take on the Ice Wolves team that has lost their last 26 games, including all of the games they’ve played in 2017.

The Mustangs have enjoyed a great deal of success against the Ice Wolves this season as they hold a perfect 5-0 record, outscoring the Ice Wolves 33-8.

The Mustangs need to make sure they do not take the Ice Wolves lightly, with Blevins noting they are not in a position to take anyone lightly, adding it will come down to effort and attitude.

“If we keep playing the way we’re playing, we’re going to have success for sure. I believe that and as long as we bring that same kind of effort and attitude into La Ronge, we’ll probably get the result we deserve.”
