Despite being shorthanded, the Melfort Mustangs made quick work of the visiting Yorkton Terriers as the home side picked up a 5-2 win.
The Mustangs came into the contest with three players dressing in their first career SJHL contest, and another who has suited up just once this season.
Despite being shorthanded, the Mustangs refused to use it as an excuse.
Unfortunately for the home side, the game did not get off to the best of starts as they found themselves behind 1-0 just 6:09 into the contest, thanks to Matthew Jones’ fifth goal of the season.
The Mustangs were able to recover and quickly took over the period as they doubled up the Terriers in shots.
Tyson Meyers scored the lone goal of the period for the home side, notching his sixth of the season, sending the game into the first intermission tied at one.
The home side continued their pressure in the second and were rewarded with goals 27 seconds apart as Ben Allen scored his third since joining the Mustangs and Zach Anderson his fourth, giving the Mustangs a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Smelling blood in the water, the Mustangs attacked early in the third as Allen scored his second of the night to give the Mustangs a 4-1 lead.
After Parker Gavlas got the Terriers back to within tow, Meyers added his second of the night to put an end to any comeback hopes for the Terriers, as the home side cruised to an easy 5-2 win.
Discipline was particularly good for the Mustangs as they took just one penalty all night, allowing no power plays against.
Hunter Arps, filling in for Evan Plotnik, who got the night off, was solid in the Mustangs goal when called upon turning aside 24 of the 26 shots he faced for his 12th win of the season as the Mustangs outshot the Terriers 46-26.
With the Nipawin Hawks sitting idle this weekend, the Mustangs have a chance to close the gap on the division lead to seven points when they take on the Flin Flon Bombers in a home-and-home series starting Feb. 9 in Melfort.
