A mystery shopper scam has been reported in the Battlefords and the RCMP and the Canadian Hearing Society have raised the alarm.

Scam targets have received a cheque in the mail that is purportedly made out by the Canadian Hearing Society, RCMP say in a press release. Recipients are urged to cash the cheque and follow instructions provided.

According to the CHS, the letters are printed on fake CHS letterhead and have been sent to random individuals across Canada. Individuals are invited to become "secret shoppers" using the $3,890 cheques. Police are advising letter recipients to not deposit the cheques, as they are fraudulent, and to not follow up on the instructions given.

CHS has reported the scam to police and urges anyone who receives such a letter to inform their local police service.

A more face-to-face scam has been reported in North Battleford. RCMP say individuals, described as being of Turkish descent, have been approaching people outside businesses offering jewelry in exchange for cash.

Police say the jewelry may be passed off as 14 carat gold. They say the jewelry looks and feels genuine, but it has been found to be made of a wax base with a covering that has the appearance of gold.

Vehicles associated to these individuals have Ontario license plates, the RCMP advise.
