A North Battleford man has been fined for failing to file personal tax returns.

The Canada Revenue Agency announced Gerald Belyk, age 56, pleaded guilty to the charge of failure to file personal income tax returns for 2012 and 2013. He was fined $1,000 for each of the missing personal returns, for a total fine of $2,000.

According to court records Belyk has until Dec. 1, 2016 to pay the fines, and the outstanding returns must be filed by March 14, 2016.

Canada Revenue Agency reminds people that when individuals are convicted of failing to file tax returns, in addition to any fines imposed by the courts, they must still file the returns and pay the full amount of taxes owing, plus interest owed, as well as civil penalties that may be assessed.

As well, the CRA says if you ever made a tax mistake or omission, they offer a second chance through its Voluntary Disclosures Program. If you make a valid disclosure before you become aware the CRA is taking action, you may only have to pay taxes owing plus interest.
