NESD has limited choices after Bjorkdale School meeting cancelled

Division can't close school, eliminate grades, without meeting or SCC's permission

A meeting that will allow the public to discuss the fate of Bjorkdale School has been cancelled.

The meeting was to happen March 29.

“When the board received direction around governance and funding on budget day, they decided they don’t need more from the community than what they’ve already received through the school review committee,” said Don Rempel, the North East School Division’s director of education.

The division had three choices as to the fate of the school: keep the status quo, eliminate grades, or close the school. The board will make a final decision on April 11, but the meeting’s cancellation limits its options.

“Without an electors’ meeting before the end of March, the board will not be in a position to close the school without the consent of the school community council,” Rempel said.

Nor can the board eliminate grades.

Rempel said the school community council has not given – or has been asked to give – consent to close the school or eliminate grades.
