First Nations education is the focus of a new exhibit opening up at the Western Development Museum this December.

It is a component to the Winning the Prairie Gamble exhibit entitled "Born with a Drum," and opens Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the North Battleford WDM.

The title is based on the foundation statement upon which the exhibit was built: " it is said the child is born with a drum in its hand."

According to a news release from WDM, the exhibit came about as a result of a partnership between the WDM and the Saskatchewan Indian Cultural College, and focuses on the topic of First Nation education.

According to the museum the exhibit is based on the design of a traditional teepee and will house artifacts and multimedia that will reflect First Nations education over time. Five themes presented include: a general introduction to the depth and breadth of First Nations learning, traditional teaching and learning, treaty rights to education, residential schooling, and the future of First Nations education.

The exhibit's sponsor is Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Community Development Corporation. The opening will be held alongside the Prairie Christmas Family Day that BATC CDC also sponsors.

Battlefords MLA Herb Cox is to be on hand for the official opening and an elder will be there to bless the gathering and the exhibit.
