TISDALE — There’s a new family doctor in town, and her name is Dr. Mahfuza Rahman.

Rahman studied medicine in Bangladesh and practised medicine there for 14 years before moving to Toronto in 2012.

“I was looking to go somewhere for practise, for the future of my kids, I would say, and for me also. Canada just looks like a very welcoming country, even though the winter is harsh, it’s a very welcoming country,”  Rahman said. “That’s why I chose Canada. It’s very immigrant friendly, people are good.”

She stayed in Toronto six years with her husband and their three children, one of which is in her twenties and now lives in Vancouver.

Her husband and two of her children are currently still in Toronto.

“They’re moving this month.”

While in Toronto she looked for work as a family doctor and decided to apply in Saskatchewan.

“I was looking for a family physician position in Canada, which is not easy for a foreign family doctor,” Rahman said. “I wanted to be a practising physician in Canada, anywhere, any place, I don’t mind.”

She chose Tisdale based on being the place where her friend, Dr. Khan, lived.

“The people of Tisdale are more welcoming than I would say, in Toronto,” Rahman said. “I like the environment, and less traffic on the road.”

In Toronto, she found people were often stressed.

“People are very happy to meet me, and they seem to be happy they got a new physician, and they’re asking, ‘are you going to stay for long?’” Rahman said before laughing. “At least three years, for sure.”

Her interests include fishing and spending time with her children.

“I’m happy, my family is happy because they know it is my dream.”
