A grant from the Nico Hawryliw Fund was presented to the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation for the Victor Pearsall Home Care Fund.

The amount of $1,233.78 is the first annual grant from the endowed fund.

"We at Battlefords Region Home Care humbly accept this donation in memory of Nico and are grateful for the support as we continue to provide home care services to others in our community," said Jodie Huber, team manager home care.

"We strive to provide the best care possible and this contribution will help enable us to continue to do so by allowing us to purchase equipment for use in the community."

According to the Battlefords and District Community Foundation, the Nico Hawryliw Fund was originally established to help offset medical costs during Nico's fight with cancer. The donations were transferred to an endowment fund and donors can continue to contribute to this fund. The annual income will help to support local groups, the foundation says. Donations are put into a permanent endowment that will only use the annual income for the grant. The principal stays in the endowment forever.

"Because of the services of home care, Nico was able to spend a lot more time at home where he was most comfortable," explained Nico's mother, Allison Hawryliw.

"We are forever grateful for this service and hope this contribution can provide equipment to help others in need. We thank the generous people who donated tothe Nico Hawryliw Fundat Battlefords and District Community Foundation, who have made this possible."

Community foundations across Canada have been established to create endowments that will provide annual income to meet needs in the community. The Battlefords and District Community Foundation currently has 13 funds that will provide funding for a range of interests from the arts and health care to high school scholarships and recreation.
