NIPAWIN — Nipawin has adopted its first risk management strategy to control, minimize and manage the risks town workers face.

The strategy sets out key objectives across a two-year rolling period but will be reviewed annually to ensure it remains fit for purpose.

“It’s really involved. It’s really a matter of providing procedures, guidance, direction and that sort of thing on the safest way to operate, the most effective ways to perform,” said Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s administrator.

The strategy dictates the town should undertake comprehensive quarterly risk reviews, as part of the process to address risks associated with strategic plans, preparing operational plans and budgets, making general decisions, and as a part of other management systems.

These risk reviews serve to ensure a common understanding of existing and emerging risks, along with the implementation of appropriate risk treatment and management strategies.

Elliott said this policy is closely tied to the asset management program as well as their occupational health and safety policy.

“Risk management has, many years ago, came into its own as an area that all organizations whether they’re private or public should focus on. The town has certainly been doing its part in terms of working on risk management and risk control.”

Occupational health and safety serves to ensure individual tasks are properly carried out with an entirely safety related focus. Elliott said that while risk management ties to that, there are also general risk reduction and efficacy elements.
