Nipawin Council is making plans for Canada’s 150th birthday.

At a regular meeting of council on Feb. 27, council voted to approve a pre-budget expenditure of $9,000 for a fireworks show on July 16th.

Chelsea Corrigan, director of parks and recreation, submitted the request, noting they’d hired the same company - Stubbs Fireworks Display in Prince Albert - for a show in 2015.

The fireworks display should last 25 to 30 minutes and will be a part of the town’s Canada 150 celebrations.

Rennie Harper, Nipawin’s mayor, acknowledged the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Nipawin Medi-Clinic, which officially opened Feb. 27.

Council voted to support Barry Elliott, the town’s administrator, for a director’s nomination to the Saskatchewan Economic Development Association Board of Directors.

“We’d be very lucky to have you on this board,” said Harper.

If appointed, Elliott would attend one board meeting annually and another three via teleconference. His term would last two years. The town of Nipawin is a member of SEDA, which focuses on community and economic development.

Harper also took the time to recognize the passing of Glen Day, who served as mayor for 12 years and as alderman for 17.
