NIPAWIN — The town will be signing a co-operation and communication protocol with the Cumberland House Cree Nation.

“This is a new initiative. The Town of Nipawin council and representatives from the Cumberland House Cree Nation and their Saskatchewan River Business Corporation, their economic development arm, has been in conversation for quite some time about strengthening the relationship between the two parties and to explore economic development opportunities that might be of mutual benefit,” said Barry Elliott, the town's administrator.

What it means is the council will continue to communicate with the Cumberland House Cree Nation and have open dialogue between the two communities. The official signing ceremony will show the positive relationship between the two parties.

“We’re hopeful in time that we’ll expand that to the other First Nations in the area,” Elliott said, adding the town has partnership agreements and understandings between many of the communities in the arena and is hoping in the future to strengthen relationships with other local First Nations.
