A decision on approving a Holodomor memorial in the city will have to wait for a future council meeting.

A resolution was on the agenda at Monday's council meeting in North Battleford with respect to that proposal. The recommendation had been to place a Holodomor memorial in Central Park.

However, council decided to receive the information only, giving direction to administration to come back with some more options for where the monument could go. One possible alternative suggested at the meeting was the Western Development Museum grounds.

The main concern expressed about the Central Park location was possible vandalism there, though some councillors did say they were OK with Central Park being the location.

The Holodomor commemorative monument is designed to remember a significant historical event - the events of 1932 and 1933 in the Ukraine when the Soviet regime imposed a famine on its people leading to the deaths of one-quarter of its population.

As many as 10 million people died in that famine. The word Holodomor stands for "plague of hunger" in Ukrainian.

The Battlefords Ukrainian Cultural Council made the request for the commemorative monument, and have been seeking a prominent public location in order to educate as many people as possible about the genocide.
