EAST CENTRAL— The North East SPCA (NESPCA) is using the closure of Sarcan as an opportunity to take unwanted bottles and save them until the recycling depots reopen.

“A lot of people have this excess of bottles that they don’t know where to put them, so we’re accepting cans and bottles in bags here and people can just drop them off at the door,” said Kristy Mason, the shelter manager. “It should be a pretty nice donation from everybody.”

For storage, the shelter is utilizing unused kennels.

Mason said due to the pandemic, the NESPCA is fostering out as many of their animals as they can to take the stress off the volunteers. As a result, several kennels are left unused.

“Right now we almost have an outdoor dog kennel full, so if we can fill all of those dog kennels that would be pretty impressive.”

The NESPCA is looking for volunteers for drop off locations in Nipawin, Tisdale, Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain and Naicam.

“We’re hoping we can get places we can keep them in other communities if we can get volunteers that will take in the bottles,” Mason said.

Should someone wish to volunteer to be a drop off point to store bottles in their community, they can contact the NESPCA board at [email protected].

In Melfort, bottles can be dropped off at the Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter at 665 Hamilton Avenue. People are asked to leave the bags at the west side of the building by the intake door.

Mason said their board got the idea from other SPCA shelters trying it in their communities.

“They were pretty successful with it so we decided to jump in on that.”
