NE Crop Report

Improved weather has allowed some producers to get into the field. Three per cent of the crop is now in the ground, behind the five-year (2013-17) seeding average of eight per cent for this time of year. Some fields remain cool and wet, although recent winds have dried up many.

Little to no rainfall was reported in the region last week, although the Arborfield and Vonda areas reported one millimeter and the Prince Albert and Garrick areas reported two millimeters. The Nipawin area has received the most precipitation (27 millimeters) in the region since April 1.

Topsoil moisture conditions have improved thanks to recent winds; however, rain will be needed in the coming weeks to help crops emerge and establish. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 15 per cent surplus, 79 per cent adequate and six per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 16 per cent surplus, 66 per cent adequate and 18 per cent short.
