Northeast loses population in 2016 Census

The Northeast did not share the growth seen in the province as a whole. The 2016 census says the region has a population of 42,164, a loss of 1,161 people since 2011. Most of the region's towns, villages, reserves and RMs lost people.

The 2016 census says the region has a population of 42,164, a loss of 1,161 people since 2011. 

Most of the region's towns, villages, reserves and RMs lost people. Melfort gained the most, gaining 416 people to reach 5,992. Nipawin gained 136 to reach 4,401, St. Brieux gained 77 to reach 667, James Smith gained 69 to reach 743, Tisdale gained 55 to reach 3,235, RM of Lake Lenore gained 51 to reach 587 and Mistatim gained 28 to reach 101.

Eight other communities – Carrot River 29A Reserve, Porcupine Plain, Zenon Park, RM of Star City, RM of Torch River, Bjorkdale, Weldon and Smeaton – had gains in the single digits. All other communities stayed steady or lost people.
