NORTHEAST — The Northeast Magic, a U12 girls softball team with players from all over the region, received bronze at provincials.

The team, which includes players from Tisdale, Nipawin, Melfort, Hudson Bay, Archerwill and Naicam, competed in Regina July 13 and 14.

“This particular team, it’s the first year we’ve ever had the team and the girls just grew and grew as the year progressed,” said Paul Dmytrow, a coach. “There was lots of improvements and they all got along well and they all worked hard and it was just a great, fun season.”

The Magic began strong, winning all four games in round robin.

“We came up against the second from another pool, the Estevan Elite and they beat us,” Dmytrow said. “They had some strong pitching.”

Estevan went into the championship round and defeated Unity, while the Magic faced and defeated Pilot Butte in the bronze medal round.

Dmytrow said there’s plans to continue having the team next year, as much of the team’s core is made up of 2007-born girls that are eligible to play another year.

“Eight of the 12 are 2007, so we definitely want to keep these girls together.”

The team is also looking for 2006 and 2007-born girls to play with the team next year.

“We’ll have tryouts early,” Dmytrow said.

U12 is the first level that competes in provincial ball. The next age group are the U14 Tisdale Riverdogs.
