Northwest students earn SYA scholarships

High school students from around the province - and several from the Northwest - are recipients of Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Industry scholarships. The program provides 80 high school students with $1,000 scholarships.

High school students from around the province - and several from the Northwest - are recipients of Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Industry scholarships.

The program provides 80 high school students with $1,000 scholarships. They are provided to those who complete SYA in high school and plan to enter a skilled trade.

To qualify for the scholarship the graduate must finish high school and the SYA program and complete one level of apprenticeship or one year of post-secondary training in a designated skilled trade. Since its inception in 2006-07, over 13,000 students have registered and over 4200 have completed the program and received certificates. Of those, 624 have registered as Sask. Apprentices. 86 SYA participants have achieved journeyperson status to date.

The SYA scholarship winners in 2013 include the following from communities in the Northwest region.

Cut Knife - Leland Chad Bull, Cut Knife High School, plumbing - PCL Construction Management Inc. Scholarship.

Edam - Marc Thomas LaClare, H. Hardcastle High School, industrial mechanic (Millwright) - CLR Saskatchewan Scholarship.

Landis - Riley Mark Thomas, Landis School, plumber - Peak Mechanical Partnership Award of Excellence.

North Battleford - Rachel L. Trach, John Paul II Collegiate, hairstylist esthetician - nail technician; Mitch Fedorchuk, North Battleford Comprehensive High School, welder - General Contractors Association Scholarship; Madison Abramson, North Battleford Comprehensive High School, cook.

Unity- Chase Layton Green, Unity Composite High School, welder - PCL Construction Management Inc. Scholarship.

Wilkie - Jamie David Glackin, McLurg High School, heavy duty equipment technician
