The Battlefords North West Historical Society has indicated it is launching a formal objection to the de-designation of St. Vital Church as a municipal heritage property.

Their letter of objection to the town, dated March 16, has been provided to the News-Optimist. Two reasons were cited:

"1. Our heritage is what we value from the past and what we preserve for future generations. Old St. Vitals church represents our collective history, defines the places where we live and work and give our community its unique identity.

"2. By retaining this Designated Heritage Building we are retaining the character of our community."

The Town has already advertised its 30-day notice of intention to pass a bylaw to repeal the municipal heritage designation for St. Vital Church, dated March 12. The reason for the proposed repeal, according to that notice, is "due to the dilapidated state and future demolition of the building." The vote on the repeal is scheduled for the town's second council meeting in April.
