The RCMP in the Battlefords are reminding all drivers of the importance of observing chool zones, students on roadways and school buses.

Battlefords Municipal Detachment sent out a news release in advance of the return of students to the classroom next week. Officers point out the excitement of students going back to school could mean students might not pay attention on sidewalks, roadways and in crosswalks.

They note that of interest to drivers will be the change of school zone speeds to 30 km/h in the city of North Battleford. The traffic bylaw brought in this year lowered the speed limit in those school zones.

"This amendment in speed will improve reaction time and distance for drivers and optimize safety when approaching youth," the release states.

The base fine for exceeding the speed limit in a school zone is $140, but increases with speed. For example, a vehicle observed at 50 km/h in a school zone would receive a $230 ticket. Speed zones in the town of Battleford remain at 40 km/h.

Drivers are also reminded students will be travelling on foot, bicycle and bus and that school buses will again be making their rounds. Drivers must observe stop arms and lights that are mandatory for school safety. The penalty for passing a school bus that has safety lights in operation is $360.

In addition to the municipal traffic team, school liaison members will also be making regular patrols of school zones. Drivers are asked to observe their speed and driving behaviour in school zones.

The Distracted Driving Law is also in full effect. Using electronic communications equipment while driving carries a $280 fine.
