Battlefords RCMP used a spike belt to stop a fleeing vehicle on Highway 4 Early Friday morning, but not before one officer narrowly escaped injury in a previous attempt to stop the vehicle.

A 20-year-old man is facing a long list of charges as a result.

RCMP say an officer originally stopped the vehicle in North Battleford at about 1 a.m. in an impaired driving investigation. As the officer approached the vehicle it sped away.

Members of the Battleford's RCMP pursued the vehicle north out of the city of North Battleford. The vehicle avoided one spike belt and in doing so narrowly missed hitting a member.

The driver and a passenger were taken into custody. The man charged faces criminal code offences of operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued, assault with a weapon, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and four counts of failure to comply with an undertaking.
