Old fashioned July 1 celebration

Plans are well underway for Maidstone's biggest annual celebration. July 1 is a great time to live in or visit the community as Canada Day welcomes an old time sports day with something for everyone.

The bowling club is planning a pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall to kick off the day. This year the event falls on a Sunday and plans are being made for an ecumenical prayer service.

The parade will wind through the streets with a place for any businesses or groups who want to enter. There will be an entertainment stage, tractor races and space to show antique cars.

A slo-pitch tournament will run with games on Saturday and Sunday allowing for more teams to participate. A horseshoe tournament will run Sunday as well as the popular divorce races.

Children's races, bike decorating contest and Stakiw's straw scramble will run on the museum grounds. There will be bingo, food venues and fireworks.

For something new, a group is also working to bring in a monster truck for demonstrations.

Those interested in volunteering, providing entertainment, registering a ball team or looking for more information can call the Town of Maidstone at 893-2373. Donations to help cover the cost of fireworks are being accepted at local businesses.
